Day 23 - Wal-Mart Joins Michelle Obama in Promoting Healthier Foods

In an article I read from USA Today, the superstore Wal-Mart has joined Michelle Obama's efforts to combat childhood obesity by reformulating thousands of its products to make them healthier. Wal-Mart is also pushing its suppliers to do the same.

The announcement of this new goal by Wal-Mart executives took place on Thursday, January  20, 2011. "The company plans to reduce sodium and added sugars in some items, build stores in poor areas that don't already have grocery stores, reduce prices on produce and develop a logo for healthier items." According to Wal-Mart CEO Bill Simon, Wal-Mart really wants to make this change happen so that people no longer have to choose between a food item that is healthy and a food item that they can afford.

Wal-Mart is the largest grocer in the United States, and thus holds a lot of power over what items are produced and sold. With their great influence, Michelle Obama believes that  they have "the potential to transform the marketplace and help Americans put healthier foods on their tables every single day."

Wal-Mart plans to cut sodium down by a quarter and to cut added sugar in some private label products by the year 2015. Many manufacturers have also followed suit in reduction of sodium and added sugars; such as Bumble Bee Foods, General Mills, Campbell Soups, PepsiCo, and Kraft Foods.

In addition to these cuts, Wal-Mart has also announced that they will reduce the prices of fruits and vegetables by $1 billion a year by cutting unnecessary costs in the supply chain. They are going to work to offer healthier foods that have traditionally cost more than the unhealthy version (i.e. wheat pasta) at reduced prices as well!

Today's Workout: Today I woke up feeling terrible again! So I did not do a workout today. My original plan was to go to a morning class called CORE that focuses on working out your core (abs, back, hips, etc). So if you are feeling fine, try doing a core workout today. Otherwise, rest up and feel better!

Today's Food Tip: I know I talked last week about eating soup if you are ever feeling ill, so today I wanted to suggest eating soup from Panara Bread. My favorite is the Broccoli Cheddar soup. My throat has been absolutely throbbing and so soup is good for soothing it. You can also dip some warm, soft bread into the soup. It'll make it a little soggier and then it will go down easier.

Today's Relaxation Activity: Today I literally slept all day long. Since it is Sunday, I also suggest for you to catch up on some shut eye. Sleep in or take a nap. If you are not feeling well, then make sure to get plenty of sleep!
