Day 30 - New Nutrition Labels Coming to the Front of Food Packages

This week, in an article by Nanci Hellmich in USA Today, we are told that food packages in grocery stores are soon not only going to be displaying their nutritional facts on the backs or sides of packages, but rather on the front of them!

This labeling system, called the Nutrition Keys, was reviled by the food industry on Monday and is intended to help shoppers make healthier choices when in the grocery store. The Nutrition Key will include calories, salt, sugar, saturated fats, and up to two other nutrients; including potassium, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, iron, or protein.

This program will be applied to packaged foods. It will begin to take effect on the grocery market in the next few months, but will take full effect by the end of the year.

While the program has just been announce, already some resistance to it has sprung up. Critics are claiming that shoppers will be even more confused by the Nutrition Key. They think the key will make figuring out numbers in context to the diet even more confusing.

In order to account for this, the White House issued a statement saying that they commended the companies who are using this Nutrition Key for their leadership and initiative in trying to help consumers make better choices, and that they would monitor the system and evaluate whether "the label is meeting the needs of American consumers and pursue improvements as needed."

Today's Workout: Ok. So tomorrow my workouts begin. I am extremely excited and ready to get back to it :). If you are working out today, I suggest doing a core workout. Try doing some circuits of sit ups, push ups, planks, and more. If you have one, use a large exercise ball and try out some exercises on that as well! Try getting a thirty minute work out it. Then get ready for running and yoga tomorrow!

Today's Food Tip: The next time you find yourself with an hour of nothing to do, turn on the cooking network or the food channel and watch a half an hour cooking show. Make sure to have your computer or a notebook and pen nearby because you will be surprised with the number of good recipes or tips for cooking you can learn! Today I watched a show called Hungry Girl and was able to come away with five promising recipes. When I have time to give them a try, I will let you know what I think and what I think you can try out too!

Today's Relaxation Activity: Often times, I find that cleaning can be a very relaxing activity, especially when you can sit back and enjoy the cleanliness of your home. So, I suggest taking fifteen minutes out of your day to clean one of the rooms in your home. Once you have the room looking good with a bit of a sparkle, take another ten minutes to just sit in it and enjoy the freshness!
