Day 71 - "Jamie Oliver in a Food Fight - a Fattening Food Fight"

Last year, Jamie Oliver, British Chef and cookbook writer who is known for turning the school food around in schools around Great Brittan, came to the U.S. to help start a food revolution. He wanted to teach the youth of America about food, to inspire families to cook in their homes, and to join in fighting against obesity.

Last spring, Jamie stared in ABC's Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, "a series", according to USA Today, "in which he worked to reform the eating habits of one of the nation's most unhealthy areas, Huntington, W. Va. , by getting residents to switch from fast food a processed fare to fresh, healthful foods." Jamie is going to be back with his show this spring, in which he will be tackling the eating habits of the people and schools of Los Angeles.

In this season of his show, Jamie will be outfitted with a new Food Revolution truck that includes a kitchen classroom inside of it so he can help to teach people how to cook around L.A. Jamie was given, according to USA Today, over $1 million in donations to help make his Food Revolution truck a reality and was also awarded the $100,000 TED (Technology, Entertainment design) prize, given to make a deserving wish a reality.

Jamie has spoken at the TED conferences and recently revealed his truck, his new website, and his partnership with the American Heart Association while speaking at a conference. With his partnership, Jamie and the AHA will be working to build kitchens in several cities to help people learn cooking skills.

Jamie is really passionate about his desire to teach children about food and a healthy diet. He believes that with today's health statistics, "it is a crime that food education isn't a requirement in every single school in America." Jamie further believes that if he can make a difference in the eating habits of America, then change will happen world-wide.

Exercise: Still no exercise today. Today would be a good day for doing an abdominals circuit and getting some good stretching in. One of my favorite kinds of ab circuits is with one of the balance balls. I have a couple videos that I like to workout to, but even better is getting into a CORE class.

Eat: "Eat Your Beans and Legumes". According to Cooking Light, beans and legumes are "low in fat and calories and are good sources of protein, folate, fiber, and antioxidants." These vegetables are so important, that the USDA's Dietary Guidelines recommends us to consume three cups of cooked beans each week! To see how good nutritionally beans are you:  a cup of cooked black beans contains about 1/3 of your daily protein needs, 60% of your folate, 1/5 of your iron needs, a good dose of potassium, and 15 grams of fiber. Cooking Light also tells us that beans may help to manage and prevent type 2 diabetes, promote cardiac health, and reduce the risk for some digestive cancers.

Relax: To relax today I played a couple games of cards with my family. I know it is one of those "old people" games, but one of my absolute favorite card games is Cribbage. If you have never heard of or played Cribbage before, I recommend getting yourself a board and teaching yourself and a group of friends. It is really quite fun!
