Day 91 - The Center for Ecoliteracy

The Center for Ecoliteracy is an organization that is a leading force in the Green Schooling Movement. They are well known for their work in pioneering school gardens, working with school lunch programs, integrating ecological principles and sustainability into school curriculums. The Center for Ecoliteracy offers books, lectures, key note presentations, teaching guides, and more for people interested in sustainability.

The Center for Ecoliteracy was co-founded by physicist Fritjof Capra, environmental philanthropist Peter Buckley, and executive director Zenobia Barlow. It is located in Berkeley, California.

The Center believes that "schools play a pivotal role in moving us beyond our growing environmental crisis and toward a sustainable society." They bring a passion to their work that "stems from [their] conviction that the best hope for learning to live sustainably lies in schooling that returns to the real basics: engaging with the natural world; understanding how nature sustains life; nurturing healthy communities; exploring the consequences of how we feed and provision ourselves; caring about the places we live and the people and creatures in them."

The Center for Ecoliteracy also provides advice and steps to take to change your schools. They give you the tools and the support you need to make the change for education on sustainability. If you are interested in learning more about what it means to change your school or what kinds of things they wish to put into school curriculums, visit their website for more information. Also, there is an area where you can donate to the organization to help them with their mission as well as other ways to get involved.

It's organizations like these that are going to make a big difference in the future of our world, by educating us earlier on the choices we make and the effects they have broad scale.

Exercise: Since I had to meet up with my brother tonight (and wanted to sleep in this morning) I didn't do a real workout today. Instead, I worked all day and then had a night spent with friends to look forward to...

Eat: One of my favorite vegetables to eat cooked or raw are bell peppers. In addition to being delicious… they are also very good for you. Bell peppers are full of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin B6, and fiber. Interestingly, sweet red peppers have about 10 times more vitamin A and 3 times more vitamin C than their green relatives.

Relax: Tonight I had a group of friends over to play card games. We played some rounds of traditional card games and then got out the old Taboo group game. We had such a blast and laughed out heads off. If you haven't played Taboo with a group of your friends (or at all) before, I highly recommend giving it a try!
