Day 92 - NY Times "F.D.A. Panel to Consider Warnings for Artificial Food Colorings"

According to the New York Times, "after staunchly defending the safety of artificial food colorings, the federal government is for the first time publically reassessing whether foods like Jell-O, Lucky Charms cereal and Minute Maid Lemonade should carry warnings that the bright artificial colorings in them worsen behavior problems like hyperactivity in some children."

While the F.D.A. is not likely to change its mind on the proposed dangers of food colorings, they asked a panel of experts to review the evidence and provide them with some advice on possible policy changes; such as warnings on food labels.

The F.D.A. concluded that the average child would not be affected by consuming artificial colorings. However, children with pre-existing behavioral disorders may have their conditions accentuated by these same products. The agency is not looking to ban food coloring additives, but they are considering putting warning on certain products in answer to groups like The Consumer Science Group.

The F.D.A. is comparing intolerance to food color additives to peanut allergies; that some are prone to them but they are not harmful to everyone. They will most likely ask that further research is done on these products and the effects of the colorings before anything is done. In the meantime, however, there are grocery markets that refuse to sell products with artificial food color additives; such as Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's.

Exercise: Today I didn't really do any workout since I still had friends over and then a birthday dinner tonight. I didn't want to have to do extra driving today... I'll be back to yoga tomorrow though.

Eat: Even though Brussels sprouts are not my favorite vegetable, they are full of all kinds of good-for-you stuff; such as folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, fiber, iron, potassium, and beta-carotene. Cabbage contains vitamin K and vitamin C. Red cabbage is also a great source of folate, while green cabbage is good for vitamin B6 and manganese. Carrots, a vegetable I do love, have vitamin A, vitamin K, potassium, lutein, and beta-carotene in them.

Relax: This afternoon, I went with Aaron over to his mom's house for a birthday dinner for his sister. We watched a movie called "Arthur" - an old comedy from 1981. It was a really cute movie. Unfortunately, I only saw the beginning and the end because I fell asleep in the middle :)
