Day 97 - Participant Media

Participant Media believes that "a good story well told can truly make a difference in how one sees the world. Whether it is a feature film, documentary or other form of media, Participant exists to tell compelling, entertaining stories that also create awareness of the real issues that shape our lives." This group exists to create entertaining shows for us to watch, and then to invite us to participate in making a difference. Participant partners with other non-profit organizations, social sector organizations, and corporations that are committed to creating an open forum for discussion, education, and who can offer specific ways for audience members to get involved. Today, Participant is linked with over 300 non-profit organizations who can potentially reach over 75 million people.

Participant Media was founded in 2004 by Jeff Skoll. One year later, many of the groups films received a total of 11 Academy Awards nominations and one Oscar award.

Some of Participant's most well known and inspiring movies are: An Inconvenient Truth, Charlie Wilson's War, Darfur Now, Fast Food Nation, Food Inc., The Kite Runner, Oceans, and more. They have also helped to produce books like "Food Inc.", "Girls Gone Green", and more.

In addition to helping to produce various movies and books, Participant also works to create social actions dealing with the topic in these forms of media (such as food safety from Food Inc. or depression from The Beaver). For each of these social actions, the group give you a list of things you can do to make a difference for the specific issue. When I looked up the actions to take after viewing Food Inc., the group suggests to do things like visit the official website, take a survey to talk about how the movie changed your views, learn 10 things to do to change our food system, get the book, and read the Hungry for a Change Blog.

I really, really encourage you to visit this site to learn more. Check out some of the different media sources and issues the group provides to us and find something to get involved in. To learn more, visit the Participant Media Official Website.

Exercise: Decided to take a short break for the next week or so. I need to get some stuff done with my mom in the studio this week...

Eat: Mushrooms are a hit and miss kind of vegetable in terms of whether they are liked. While I love the flavoring of mushrooms… I have issues with their texture. Mushrooms do offer a host of good-for-you benefits though. They contain riboflavin, niacin, potassium, and antioxidants. According to Cooking Light, "mushrooms are 90% water and have only 18 calories per cup, but they harbor large amounts of antioxidants. They also offer a healthy dose of potassium, which plays a role in lowering blood pressure." Two more veggies with benefits are okra, which has vitamin C, folate, and fiber; and onions which contain vitamin C, vitamin B6, fiber, and manganese.

Relax: After a long day of work today, Aaron and I got to go and spend some time with our friends Chris and Katherine (Kat) at their house. We played one of my favorite games (the game of Life) as well as yatzee. Fun times!
